The Client
With an unparalleled reputation for service excellence, Our client has been providing the entertainment industry with media storage and distribution services since the 1930's.
Recognised as the leader in Film and Video format Storage, their climate-controlled vaults store more than 5,000,000 reels of film, video and audio-related material worldwide. They also provide a wide range of Technical and Inventory Management Services.
The Problem
The client manages multiple warehouses around the world containing hard media assets for media companies who need specialized storage for their delicate assets. The client-server inventory management system built in-house was slow and cumbersome. It required Citrix client access to allow media customers to access their inventory. Most clients sent emails with lists of titles to be shipped to their location for editing and processing.
Searches for particular pieces of inventory took over ten minutes to complete. The lack of scalability was hindering our client's ability to effectively communicate order information with the various warehouses.
The client wanted a web interface on the inventory that would allow clients to log in, view the content of their assets online using streaming video and select inventory items to be shipped.
The Solution
The Qrimp Team worked directly with the client to build a fully functional prototype of an inventory management system that would enable bar code scanning to check physical assets in and out. After physical assets were scanned and ingested, streaming video could be used to preview the material to determine if the customer wanted that particular piece shipped via carrier from the warehouse to the editing facilities.
Searches for inventory that previously took ten minutes or more were completed in fractions of a second.
The Process
Over the course of several weeks with meetings over the phone and in person, the Qrimp team became familiar with the business processes and physical layout of the warehouses. We built a custom system and installed it on a server and shipped it to the client offices for review.
The Delivery
The client had been investigating packaged solutions in the range of $110-150,000. These products did not include all the functionality required and would need extensive overhauls to meet the needs of the client. A custom system was budgeted to cost $260,000 and take 6 months to deliver.
Our fully functional prototype was delivered in 2 weeks for a total cost of $5,000.
